Back to School with S.S. Daley

Out from the darkest depths of this never-ending pandemic, some light has finally broken through the surface: introducing class of 2020 graduate Steven Stokey-Daley and his AW21 menswear collection.

Dubbed ‘The Robe Room is Becoming the Garden’, S.S. Daley dares to challenge what we’ve long-time associated with the elite circle of English school boys hailing from Eton and Harrow, a group typically disassociated from those of us with a Northern vernacular, to deliver an oh-so exhilarating collection of sustainable men’s pieces.

“An exploration of the language of masculinity and dressing at Harrow and Eton schools from my own working-class viewpoint,” – S.S. Daley

Subverting the signature trademarks of the old Etonian uniform, Stokey-Daley sets any adverse assumptions of the school get-up aside through dandified tailoring, satin dress shirts, a selection of boater hats that wouldn’t look out of place twirling round a maypole and more florals than the Chelsea Flower Show. Personally, it’s the trio of heavyset cable knit pants, cardie and Harrovian hat that do it for me.

With the lockdown leaving the designer to work with locally-sourced and donated materials, the line really does leave any upper-class pretence at the door, and nowhere seems more appropriate to showcase and sell Stokey-Daley’s wares other than his own Instagram channel.

Truth be told, picturing the current PM in a pair of voluminous trousers and embroidered vest isn’t something I’d encourage. Harry Styles on the other hand…
